Hotham Sound Kayak Launch Site at Egmont
Getting to Egmont (Launch Site)
There is always the opportunity to ride with Kit and Company to their kayaking destinations but those looking to travel independently should read up. Egmont is the northernmost town on the lower section of the Sunshine Coast. Although the Sunshine Coast is part of the British Columbia mainland, you must take a ferry to get there from Vancouver and the rest of the lower mainland. Take the ferry to Langdale from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. Ferries run all day every day and there is usually no need for a reservation but if you want to play it safe, you can visit the B.C. Ferries website at bcferries.com. Once on the Sunshine Coast, it is really just a matter of driving north until you reach Egmont. There is only one main road and Egmont is the last town you will hit and so it’s hard to miss. Just follow Hwy 101. Along the road you will drive through Gibsons, Sechelt and Roberts Creek. You will have no problems finding places to eat or sleep if you are arriving early or staying late after the trip.
There are a number of things to do in all of these Sunshine Coast communities but if you have a couple hours on your hands, take a hike in Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park in Egmont. Here you can hike to the Skookumchuck Narrows where water moves through a small inlet at speeds up to 30 km/hr. Some kayakers play around in the rapids here but don’t get ambitious about hopping in your boat unless you are an advanced paddler with extensive experience in fierce water. It’s no place for beginners.
